JAWSFEST & Shark Conservation

JAWSFEST: The Tribute is committed to promoting shark conservation. With the support of Shark Savers and conservationists from around the world, we are incorporating a strong conservation theme into our event and making this the Summer for the Sharks on Martha’s Vineyard. Among other things, we’ll have a Sharks, Arts, and Conservation exhibit with presentations and special donation receptacles (Great White Shark heads) placed around the island and on select ferries. 100% of funds raised through these will be donated to shark conservation.

Why Sharks Matter
Some shark populations are down a frightening 90% over the last 40 years, and sharks face the threat of extinction in every part of the world. In their role at the top of the food chain, sharks keep populations of other fish healthy and in proper proportion for their ecosystem.

Shark fin soup is a particular challenge for conservationists; the soup is responsible for the destruction of shark populations throughout the world. Shark fin soup is served by well-meaning hosts thinking it a source of good health and a symbol of prosperity—but shark fins contain high levels of poisonous mercury.

you were here

living in our ocean

clean and clear

400 million years ago

you were here

now, your end is near

humans kill you for fins

humans kill you for fun

you cannot speak

so we speak for you

you cannot sing

so we sing for you

400 million years ago

you were here

now your end is near

what have we done

what have we become

we’re the only one

who kills for fun

we’re the only one

who kills for fun
